Travel along the heroic footpaths of our freedom fighters and experience the city of Johannesburg and Soweto through their eyes on this full day tour. Experience a theatrical freedom tour de force with your theatrical tour guide, dressed in costume and in character for a full day. Enjoy your experience while being guided by Walter Sisulu (a former leader of the ANC), Ruth First (anti-Apartheid activist), or even Nelson Mandela (anti-Apartheid activist). Highlights include Liliesleaf Farm, the Regina Mundi Church, a photo opportunity at the Soweto Cooling Towers, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial (photo opportunity only), the route of the uprising and place where Hector Pieterson was shot. The Hector Pieterson Memorial honours the role that South Africa’s students played in the struggle against Apartheid and in particular the role that school children who took part in the 1976 Soweto protests played. Liliesleaf in Rivonia used to be the headquarters for the liberation movement and a safehouse for its leaders in 1960, and the Soweto Cooling Towers (Orlando Towers) have become one of the most distinct landmarks in Soweto, previously serving as a coal-fired power station. We drive past Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, view Nelson Mandela Bridge (photo opportunity, not crossing the bridge), Mary Fitzgerald Square and general Newtown sites. Enjoy lunch (for own account) at a restaurant in Vilakazi Street, Soweto’s most famous street, since it is the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Prize winners: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and family. We visit the homes of Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela (photo opportunity only). Freedom Square (officially called Walter Sisulu Square) in Soweto, the Carlton Centre and Constitution Hill Prison and Court in Johannesburg CBD also play a fundamental part along this riveting storytelling route. It was at Freedom Square (Walter Sisulu Square) where in 1955 the Freedom Charter was drawn up, as an alternative vision to the Apartheid state.
