Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just a few minutes’s drive from the Strip, has scenery so dramatic that it is often selected as the backdrop for movies and commercials. Start with a 21km (13 mile) loop drive along this beautifully rugged landscape. See the impressive Wilson Cliffs, part of the 65-million-year-old Keystone Thrust, and pass by the fossilised sand dunes of the brilliantly coloured Calico Hills and limestone roasting pits used by the Paiute tribe of Native Americans, who would cook agave hearts in them. Enjoy the views from High Point Overlook, which is almost 1,500 metres (5,000ft) above sea level, on the way to Willow Springs. There will be a brief stop at a visitor centre where you can wander through the fascinating exhibits, see a desert tortoise habitat and a browse the souvenir shop.
