In the 18th century the building was used as an academy for the Bourbon army where an ounce and a half of chocolate was given to the troops for breakfast every day due to its energy boosting properties. For this reason the king´s personal guards became known as the “chocolateros”. Learn how since its discovery in the 15th century, chocolate has played a key role in the economic and social history of Barcelona with the City´s port being a starting point for the sale and distribution of the product all over Europe, and discover how the City became the first to produce chocolate as a beverage at the end of the 19th Century.
