Aurangabad has been declared as the Tourism Capital of Maharashtra due to being a hub of many important historical sites in India. Two of them, Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most important identity of the city is that it has numerous stone ‘Gates’ – a typical characteristic of it being a medieval city. There were about 52 of them at its peak however only a few survived the onslaught of modernity. The most architecturally appealing gates of Aurangabad today are Delhi Gate, Kala Darwaza, Makia Gate, Paithan Gate and Rangeen Darwaza. Today start your day by visiting Bibi ka Maqbara and Panchakki located in the old city. Bibi ka Maqbara – a tomb commissioned by the Prince Azam Shah son of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb between 1651 and 1661 AD in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum (posthumously known as Rabia-ud-Daurani). It has a striking resemblance to the famous Taj Mahal. Next visit Panchakki which was a water-mill used to grind grain for the pilgrims. This monument displays a scientific process executed in the medieval era. It used to run by the force of water brought down from a spring on a mountain.
